Committee secures land for hall project
The Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North committee has finally secured a ten-acre piece of land to build Labasa’s first multipurpose hall.
This was confirmed by committee president Vishwa Deo yesterday.
He said the land was situated closer to All Saints Secondary School at Vulovi. “The paper work for this project, having secured the piece of land, is almost complete,” Mr Deo said.
“The project will be done in stages and it is a five-year plan that will cost a lot of money.
“The purchase of land itself will cost us about $100,000.
“While we are working towards this major project we have not forgotten our commitment towards assisting the Labasa Hospital,” Mr Deo said.
“In two to three weeks we will receive two ultrasound machines from New Zealand for Labasa Hospital because it is in need of these resources.
“These machines will help in early detection of breast cancer and complications and assist the gynaecologist and patients.
“The cost of getting this done will be approximately $50,000.
“The need for this resource was highlighted to us by the Labasa Hospital medical superintendent Doctor Jaoji Vulibeci during our follow-up visits.” Meanwhile, Mr Deo has confirmed that the annual week-long festival will be held at Subrail Park in Labasa from August 18- 25. The committee has begun looking for contestants and aims to have ten queens and five kings, depending on the availability of sponsorship.
