SUMMARY OF PSEC MEETING IN NADI
Below is a summary of some of the guest speakers presentation at the Private Sector Engagement Conference, a prelude to the 19th World Customs Organisation Asia/Pacific Regional Heads of Customs Administration Meeting at the Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa yesterday.
Nicola Marshall –Risk Analytics Director, Deloitte, Brisbane, Australia The presentation was based on big data, analytic and practical steps that needed to be taken to become data enabled with one’s organsiation. In all it was translating the big buzz word concepts of analytic AI machine learning into practical things one could implement as a first stage of that maturity journey.
Kunio Mikuriya – Secretary General, World Customs Organisation, Belgium. The conference was pertinent to what World Customs Organisation was doing because there was a need to create a business environment for economic development and for that we need to get the private sector closer to Customs. Have more dialogue / conversation to understand each other. Customs must understand the private sector business model and they must understand why Customs regulations were there. Also he spoke on connecting borders and collating border analysis.
Steve Moore – Director Trusted and Industry Empowerment, Department of Home Affairs, Australia. Presented on how to better use data received from traders. In Australia, programmes are being developed around the use of that data and how better we can work with industries on facilitating their cargo. Explanation was given on how these programmes worked and provide insight on how their programmes could work.
Alex Menta – Regional Customs manager, Australia and New Zealand, GM Holden Limited, Australia. Presentation was on trade and where it is heading from an industry perspective. Also on the importance of industry working with government to develop processes that facilitate trade without compromising community risk and revenue to government.
Courtney Lutterman, Director Customs and Trade Compliance, United Parcel Service, Asia Pacific, Singapore. Presentation was on UPS, a global integrator dealing with trade in Asia and cross border e-commerce. Also presented on different business models, new players in Asia, new technology. Also shared on challenges faced by the industry and Customs including new traders who did not know the rules and who sometimes knowingly and unknowingly break the rules.
Michelle McCormack, Director, Leadership facilitator and Coach, People Focus, New Zealand. Presentation was on leadership and the talent to unlocking eco-system. She said the days of the ‘herooic leader’ and they were now looking to leadership at every level so that we can connect people to have conversation that was needed. Looking to source people from a broad range.
Bill Wray, National Customs Compliance Manager, DHL Global Forwarding (Aust) Pty, Ltd, Australia Presentation how a freight forwarder or service provider interacts with both Customs and Revenue Department. Also on how data could be shared and information available and programmes available throughout the region. Spoke on how there was need for fast delivery to the door with less costs.
