Labasa Muslim College Year Nine student Unaisi Dimaimuri was in tears when her teachers and colleagues brought donations to assist her family who lost everything in a fire last month. The 14-year-old, accompanied by her brother Sarusi Drauna, 24, received $300 cash, kitchen utensils and clothes under a temporary shelter at Nabekavu in Labasa yesterday.

They thanked the school principal Safiq Ahmed, teachers and students for their contribution.

“I was in school when our house was destroyed in a fire,” Unaisi said. “When I returned home I cried bitterly because all my childhood memories and collection of materials were not there anymore.

“Hence, I didn’t go back to school for one week because I was feeling lonely and depressed.”

The aspiring journalist, whose parents were away from home, said once they have collected enough housing material they, would build a house.

Mr Ahmed said when he realised that Unaisi was absent from school he went to the teachers to get some information. “Her mother visited us and revealed how the house was destroyed in a fire and so we decided to start a collection within two weeks,” Mr Ahmed said.

“We treat Unaisi as part of the Labasa Muslim College family and we don’t want her to feel left out.

“We quickly arranged materials for her so that she can continue her education.

“Our school with a student roll of 250 from Year Nine to 13 and 31 teachers are committed to support our students and provide assistance to Unaisi and her family in the best way we could.”
