COMPACT Two countries ratify USP Convention

The University of the South Pacific’s (USP) further embedding within its 12-member countries will soon be formalised with the coming into effect of the USP Convention on June 16, 2018.

This is after the deposit of two more Instruments of Ratification with the Government of Fiji, through Ratu Tui Cavuilati, the Roving Ambassador at Fiji’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on May 17, 2018.

Tuvalu and Vanuatu became the 6th and 7th member countries respectively to ratify the USP Convention.

In accordance with provisions of the USP Convention, Ratu Tui formally announced that the USP Convention would come into effect on June 16, 2018, 30 days from the day of deposit of the 6th ratification.

“With the deposit of these two additional ratifications I wish to convey the Fiji Government’s congratulations and well wishes to USP and its member countries,” Ratu Tui said. Winston Thompson, USP ProChancellor and Chair of Council, firstly acknowledged the Government of Fiji for its continued strong support over the years.

“Fiji is USP’s home base and we would not have fulfilled our responsibilities without Fiji’s very strong support and the Government of Fiji being the depository for our Tuvalu and Vanuatu became the two member-countries respectively to ratify the USP Convention.

The remaining country, Niue, will sign at the USP Council in Nauru on May 22-23, 2018.
