Qio’s important role on Harry and Meghan’s wedding day

We should be proud of Peni Qio from Naceva, Beqa, a member of the Queen's Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment for the role he played at the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

Mr Qio was part of the regiment that escorted the wedding procession through the streets of Windsor.

It ensured that with Fiji's strong ties to the British crown, the Pacific Island country had a presence at Windsor, West of London.

While much of the focus was on the royal couple – the Duke and Duchess of Sussex – and a passionate sermon from the Most Reverend Michael Curry quoting the late Dr Martin Luther King, making the American the undoubted star of the wedding – the Fijian quietly went about his work.

Before the wedding Mr Qio and two of his workmates, Elima Nawari from Tubeirata, Nadroga, and Jale Galuvakadua, of Draiba, Navosa, met Warrant Officer Class 1 (WO1) Betty Chandra, who is studying at Oxford University, and they told her one of them would be part at the Royal Wedding procession. They are honoured to serve Her Majesty the Queen. We should be proud of them, especially when they are part of the most trusted Queen's guardians.

The Household Cavalry are Cavalry Regiments who, along with the five Foot Guards Regiments, form the Household Division.

Formed in 1661 under the direct order of King Charles II the Household Cavalry today consists of the two senior regiments of the British Army - The Life Guards and the Blues and Royals.

They have two roles:

The operational role of The Household Cavalry Regiment is in armoured fighting vehicles and they have been involved in Britain's military operations including the Falklands, the Gulf, Bosnia, Kosovo and most recently in Iraq and Afghanistan; and The ceremonial role of The Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment, equipped with horses, consists of a squadron of The Life Guards, and a squadron of The Blues and Royals who provide “The Queen's Life Guard” and carry out ceremonial duties, including the provision of the Sovereign's Escort for State and Royal occasions.

According to Wikipedia, the Household Cavalry is made up of the two most senior regiments in the British Army: The Life Guards and The Blues & Royals.

It's divided into the Household Cavalry Regiment and the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment. Whether they're riding a horse or driving an armoured vehicle, all Household Cavalry soldiers have one thing in common: Excellence.

It was that excellence that was on show at the royal wedding.

It was that excellence that Trooper Qio and his fellow Fijians displayed.
