Supervisor of Elections Mohammed Saneem has highlighted that more than 9400 staff members have been allocated to polling stations for the 2018 General Election.

He made the statement during a press conference at the Fijian Elections Office headquarters in Suva yesterday.

Mr Saneem said FEO had received a significant number of requests from individuals, who now would like to be part of the general election as election officials. “Based on the requests, we are considering whether we should open recruitment again,” he said.

“We have already allocated about 9400 staff at polling stations which is sufficient enough to run polling places.

“However, if the opportunity presents us with people who are available in the localities to work in that locality, we are willing to take it up.”

He said there were some targeted recruitments ongoing this week which was managed by FEO’s divisional managers in remote areas to try and see if FEO was able to secure staff from those areas to work in those locations.

“At the moment in the event we do not get any staff, we have back up for that, but we would like to see if we can get people from the same locality,” Mr Saneem said.

“We are not counting them out.

“We are doing it on a small scale in some areas, but it is highly unlikely that we will do a nationwide recruitment drive again because the polling places are filled with staff.”
