Rabuka seeks legal advice over 2000 coup allegations

SODELPA leader Sitiveni Rabuka has sought legal advice after allegations about the 2000 Coup surfaced on social media. The allegations were made by Fiji Labour Party election team leader Aman Ravindra-Singh, on his personal Facebook account.

Mr Singh claimed that on May 19, 2000, “just after 10am, terrorist soldiers and civilians armed with guns entered parliament and took the Labour Government hostage.

“All Opposition members were released!

“Before 12pm, Sitiveni Rabuka enters the late President Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara’s official residence, Government House. “Rabuka meets with the President’s secretary, Joseph Brown and asks to meet with the President and is given immediate audience.

“President Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara greets Rabuka and Rabuka says; “I am ready”.

The President replies; “Ready for what?” To which Rabuka replied; “To take over Executive Authority. Give me Executive Authority and I will deal with the crisis in Parliament” “This was Rabuka asking the President of Fiji to hand over Executive Power to him.”

The claims continued. In his post, Mr Singh also claimed that he was a witness.

Mr Rabuka said commenting on those allegations could be a breach of the new law.

“So I don’t want to comment, I have refrained from commenting because we could be participating on something against the law,” he said.

“I have asked my lawyer to look at it.”
