The Fiji Red Cross Society now has a branch in Savusavu, Vanua Levu.

With help from the Australian government, branch president Epeli Tukania commended Australia for its support.

“The new office that we opened here will form a strategic role in supporting our work not only in Savusavu but for the whole of the Northern Division,” Mr Tukania said.

“I have been part of Fiji Red Cross for more than 15 years and I cannot say how happy I am and how wonderful it is that we finally have an office and a place we can call home.” The new Savusavu office was funded by the Australian government. Opening the new office was the Australian High Commissioner to Fiji, John Feakes.

At the opening, Mr Feakes reiterated the Australian government’s efforts to tackle the effects of climate change.

“Australia stands ready to support Fiji’s efforts in the stewardship of climate change issues at the local, regional and global level with the plight of small island developing states at the centre of this concern,” Mr Feakes said.

“A key part of our support is focused on building the capacity and resilience of local agencies.

“Australia is committed to supporting Fiji’s efforts to build resilience, and manage and mitigate risks in disaster response and preparedness.”

Fiji Red Cross Society also opened its new branch in Labasa yesterday.
