KORO ISLAND Visiting Medics Head Commends District School
The head of the Sathya Sai medical team Dr Dinesh Lal has commended Nabasovi District School in Koro for its spaciousness and preparedness. “We are blown away by the school’s preparation for the team of doctors and nurses to start with their work,” said Dr Lal said yesterday.
Dr Lal, who is the gastroenterologist at Middlemore Hospital in Auckland, New Zealand, said this was the first impression he got when arriving at the school yesterday morning.
The Sathya Sai medical team were on Koro Island to conduct medical check-ups.
“This is the first impressive campsite that I have seen in many visits we have had,” he said.
Dr Lal has been involved in Sathya Sai camps for more than 10 years in Fiji and the well organised school facilities was a plus for the team to quickly set up and serve the people right away.
This is compared to sites that were not prepared when the team had to sometimes come in, clean and arrange everything before starting its work.
Dr Lal said the tents erected by the school and the closing of classes for the day to assign classrooms for temporary medical clinics for the 91-member team to serve the 14 villages in Koro was commendable.
“It’s the best prepared venue I ever experienced since my first participation in the mission over 10 years ago,” he said. Twelve classrooms had been labelled for all the sections of medical service provided by the team. The rooms had been scrubbed clean for the team to maximise its service for the day at Nabasovi District School.
The medical service is sponsored by the Sathya Sai Organisations of New Zealand and Fiji.
“The teachers, students and parents started cleaning up at 6am to set up for the team and wait for people to come and be served,” said Nabasovi District School head teacher Avilash Krishna.
Mr Krishna, who was transferred to the Nabasovi last October after the completion of the school’s $1 million refurbishment, has made an impact since his inception as the school head.
He said the combined effort of the school and the three villages of Nabasovi, Navaga and Tavua whose children attend the school was the reason for the preparedness. This provided the platform for the school to host the service to the whole island. About 50 people had been in the reception tent waiting since 8am when the vehicles with the visiting medical team arrived. More vanloads of people arrived from the coastal villages as well as Vatulele villagers who arrived from inland during the day. Dr Lal said the team had served 580 patients by noon yesterday and he expected the team to be busy all afternoon to serve 700 to 800 patients by the end of the day. The team left Koro last night and will be serving the people of Gau from Navukailagi Village today before returning to Suva. ALSO READ
