Situation:

A high pressure system together with a low pressure system to the far southwest of Fiji generates and directs moderate to heavy southerly swells towards the group. Meanwhile, a weak trough of low pressure with the associated cloud and showers affects the southern and eastern parts of the group. Another trough with an embedded low pressure system is expected to approach Fiji from the west and to affect the group from later today. The low is expected to bring heavy rain with strong and gusty winds over Fiji from later today.

Forecast to midnight tonight for the Fiji group:

For low lying coastal areas of Kadavu, Beqa, Vatulele, Southern Lau group, Mamanuca group, southern and western Viti Levu: Sea flooding likely especially during high tides. Occasional showers and few thundersto­rms over Kadavu, Lau and Lomaiviti group. Brief showers about the eastern parts and interior of the larger islands. Elsewhere, fine apart from isolated afternoon or evening showers. Moderate southeast winds. Moderate to rough seas.

Outlook for tomorrow:

Occasional rain over most places with isolated heavy falls and squally thundersto­rms. Strong southeast to northwest winds with average speeds of 40km/ hr with momentary gusts to 55km/hr. Rough to very rough seas. Sea flooding during high tides expected over low lying coastal areas of Kadavu, Beqa, Vatulele, Southern Lau group, Mamanuca group, southern and western Viti Levu.

For Navua / Suva / Nausori:

Cloudy periods with some showers. Isolated afternoon or evening heavy falls and thundersto­rms expected.
