Robust Fiji Airways Fijian 7s utility back Eroni Sau has been named 2017/18 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series Rookie of the Year.

The announcement was made by World Rugby during Sunday’s awards night in Paris, France.

Speaking to SUNsports last night, Fiji Rugby Union chief executive officer John O’Connor said they are happy with Sau’s achievement. “On behalf of the Fiji Rugby Union and its board members we would like to congratulate Eroni Sau on his success,” he said.

When contacted Police rugby coach Sale Tubuna said Sau’s award was a big achievement on his sporting career.

“When Sau made the Fiji 7s team this year we saw a big change in him on how he approaches his game,” Tubuna said.

“It’s something that he has learned along the way and I’m happy that he has made his mark in the sevens world.”

Saru Dragons Rugby League club coach Lagilagi Golea said, it was a proud moment for the Saru community in Lautoka where Sau started his sporting career from. “It was a boost to our players and youths as Sau has proved to them that success comes if they are prepared to make sacrifices and are committed to achieving their sporting goals,” he said.

“Golea indicated they are happy that Sau has signed a two-year contract with French Top 14 club Perpignan.

Sau was nominated along with winger Alasio Naduva and Ben O’ Donnell of Australia.

The Naviti, Yasawa, native made his debut for Fiji at the 2017 Dubai Sevens and so far has scored a total of 185 points (37 tries) in 58 matches. Sau was also part of the Fiji Airways Drua side that played in last year’s Australia’s National Rugby Championship.
