The Minister for Industry, Trade, Tourism, Lands and Mineral Resources Faiyaz Koya officiated during the event at the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC) grounds in Rakiraki.

“This is again a demonstration of the Fijian Government’s commitment to fostering an environment for sustainable and inclusive economic growth, they have travelled all the way from Tavua to be with us,” Mr Koya said. “I thank them for their patience and understanding. For some the wait is now over.”

A grateful 77-year-old widow, Siri Mati said it was like a dream come true for her, because now the paranoia and living in fear of being evicted were over.

“Now, I can without fear develop the residential land that I have been given. It will be done with a lot of hope for my family,” Ms Mati said. She is living alone because both her daughters are now happily married and have moved overseas, but remained in constant contact. “They will be happy to hear this, because at last now I know that I have security of land and this provides me with an opportunity to develop our land and our house,” she said.

Ms Mati said, she was awarded a lease to their 637 square metres residential land at Bangladesh Settlement in Tavua.

She thanked the Fijian Government for taking their plea into consideration and for helping them with what they had always prayed for.
