Ratuvou: Eid a Celebration of Bringing People Together
Makelesi Ratuvou says Eid al-Fitr is a significant celebration because it teaches us the principles of sharing and caring.
Ms Ratuvou yesterday welcomed Eid with her children and her neighbour, Shinaz Bi, who invited them.
While sharing her stories she recalled her school days when she used to go to her friend’s place for the celebration.
“When I was in school I visited my friend’s place to celebrate Eid with her family,” Ms Ratuvou said.
“It is a celebration that brings people together and it is about sharing and caring for each other.” Ms Bi said echoed similar sentiments.
“It is based on our strong belief and dedication throughout the month of Ramadan to wake up early every morning to do my prayers with members of my family,” she said.
“During this holy month we always had our breakfast and dinner together.
“We usually do not get time to spend together with each other, but festivals like this give us a chance to sit together pray and eat.” The 45-year-old said Eid was not only celebrated by Muslim families, but with all multicultural families around Fiji.
“This is a celebration of sharing and caring for the poor and wishing for peace to all those around us,” Ms Bi.
“This is not the only time we should come together. We should always stay together as one in this multiracial country.”
She has made sweets and today she will make lunch and dinner for visitors.
