The Indian High Commission in Fiji has once again organised a programme for the people of the Friendly North to mark International Day of Yoga. Hundreds of Fijians gathered at the Labasa Civic Centre yesterday to do yoga. The commission’s commerce officer, Sachin Mehta, said since 2015 it had organised a programme in Labasa to mark the special occasion.

“Yoga is very important for us and when we do it we feel very relieved,” Mr Mehta said.

“For the commission we have six South Pacific countries including Fiji and we make sure we organise the yoga programme.

“To the people of Fiji I would like to urge them to do yoga everyday for at least 15 minutes to remain fit and healthy. Personally, I feel that if you do yoga everyday you do not need to visit the doctor.”

Chief guest and National Federation Party Member of Parliament Parmod Chand said the theme for this year’s celebration was ‘Yoga for Diabetes’.

“Fiji’s diabetes rate is one of the highest in the world,” Mr Chand said.

“In a 24-hour period three amputations take place in our public hospitals due to diabetes infections.

“Several studies have revealed that yoga can reduce contributing factors towards diabetes as well as help patients cope with diabetes symptoms.

“Just as we all want good governance, transparency and accountability in our nation, we must ensure that we maintain good governance practices of our health.” Three members from the Fiji Association of the Deaf also took part in the programme.
