Bus crash in India leaves 44 dead

New Delhi: The twisted chassis of a passenger bus had its roof sheared clean off after it crashed into a gorge in northern India on Sunday.

At least 44 people were killed and three others injured, officials said. Search and rescue crews were at the crash site in the hilly Pauri Garhwal district in the Himalayan state of Uttarakhan­d, police said.

“The bus lost control and swerved off the road, into a deep valley. It broke into two pieces on impact and it is now in a small river at the bottom of the valley,” disaster management official Deepesh Chandra Kala told
