77 People on 73 Serious Non-Sex Charges

There were 77 people charged with a total of 73 counts of separate incidents in June. These incidents were serious crimes other than sexual violence offences.

The offences were:

• attempted murder (2),

• aggravated robbery (19), • attempted aggravated burglary (2), • aggravated burglary

(10), • theft (12), • dangerous driving causing death (1), • dangerous driving causing grievous harm (1), • reckless driving (1), • careless driving (1), • driving without license (1), • driving without third party (1), • assault causing actual bodily harm (4), • act with intent to cause grievous harm (5), • unlawful wounding (3), • arson (3), • obtaining financial advantage by deception (1), • threatenin­g statement at airport (3), • criminal intimidati­on (1), • damaging property (1) • and resisting arrest (1).

There were three juveniles charged with aggravated robbery offences.

This data is authorised for release by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutio­ns (ODPP).

It relates to the number of formal indictment­s (Informatio­n) filed in the High Courts of Fiji by the Director of Public Prosecutio­ns throughout the month.

This data is confined to incidents of serious crimes other than sexual violence offences. The sexual violence offences are recorded and published separately.

This data also includes offences committed by Police officers.

The incidents

There were 49 victims of the 73 counts of separate incidents. Of the 49 victims, there were five incidents where the accused and victims were related to one another and one incident where a Chinese national was allegedly robbed of $1200 cash at knife point. A 56-year-old man was charged with two counts of attempted murder. He allegedly struck his de facto wife and stepdaught­er with a cane knife.

There was one incident

where a 59-year-old bus driver was charged with dangerous driving causing death. He was also charged with dangerous driving causing grievous harm and reckless driving.

A 41-year-old woman died and three other victims sustained injuries as a result. There were four incidents of assault causing actual bodily harm.

One of these four incidents was a domestic matter where a 23-year-old woman was charged for allegedly burning her nine-year-old daughter with a hot iron. There were five incidents of an act with intent to cause grievous harm. Three of these five incidents were domestic matters.

In one incident a 26-yearold man was charged for allegedly stabbing his de facto partner with a knife. In another incident a 48-year-old man allegedly used a cane knife to cause grievous harm to his brother. And in the third incident a 33-year-old man allegedly sewed the vulva of his 13-year-old stepdaught­er after he allegedly raped her. (NB: The offence of rape was recorded separately).

There was one incident where five men were charged with an act with intent to cause grievous harm after they attacked a Police officer who tried to stop an aggravated robbery incident. There were three incidents of unlawful wounding. In one of these three incidents, a 20-year-old college prefect was charged for allegedly smashing a ceramic bowl on a 16-year-old pupil. Cash and assorted items ranged from $30 to $20,000 were stolen during the alleged aggravated robbery and aggravated burglary offences which consisted of home invasions, office and shop break-ins, vehicle break-ins, and daylight street robberies. Assorted items stolen during these offences include mobile phones, household goods and taxis.

In one of the aggravated burglary offences, the accused allegedly set fire to a building which caused damage of $42,000. Other offences were also recorded as part of the incidents for June 2018.
