People Who Abuse System Will Be Excluded: CEO
The ACCF will cover school yard injuries as the AttorneyGeneral and Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum mentioned in the 20182019 National Budget
The Accident Compensation Commission Fiji (ACCF) chief executive officer Parvez Akbar said that people who abuse the system would be excluded from compensation. He made this statement after the National Budget announcement for 2018-2019 where the ACCF was allocated $1.7m compared to $700,000 for the 2017-2018 National Budget.
“Depending on the assessments, you may or may not get as much money as you desired for. Because of that, I don’t think there will be a level of any kind of abuse although there is talk of it,” Mr Parvez said
“There are some people who are talking about how they can acquire money by fooling the system.
“At the end of the day, if our investigations show that someone’s done that, then they could be excluded from compensation.
“So we are quite thrilled that it continues with overwhelming support. The scheme will be expanding its work covering incidents in schools as well.
“So it’s very exciting for us going forward to be part of the expanding commission.”
On June 22, 2018, families of the late Patricia Rokoua-Mawi and the late Taniela Tuinivonu received $75,000 each from ACCF in the form of an accident compensation. In addition, the ACCF will cover school yard injuries as the Attorney-General and Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum mentioned in the 2018-2019 National Budget. Families can use the funds for medical attention and recovery of the student.
“This is also going to paint a very clear picture of which schools have serious problems with abuse on school property and need special attention,” he said. According to the Ministry of Education’s International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking Supplementary Book for 2018, there were 20, 462 cases of violence recorded in schools in Fiji.
