If anyone wants to join the Fiji Police Force band he or she has to be very good in mathematics, English, music, history and be physically fit.

Fiji Police Band music director Assistant Superintendent of Police Ilaitia Tamani said this to students of Labasa College after 40 members of the Fiji Police Force marching and dance band performed at the school yesterday.

ASP Tamani said there were a lot of opportunities available to those who wish to join their band, but there were strict requirements.

“The men and women in the band are not here because music is their hobby. They are here because music is their bread and butter,” ASP Tamani said.

“Musicians are scientists because they do their own experiments to remix songs and you have to have the knowledge to read music notes and instructions.

“You have to eat and drink well and exercise to stay healthy so that you can stand for long periods and carry musical instruments.”

ASP Tamani said the band would be in Labasa for a few days visiting selected schools with entertainment, awareness on opportunities provided to students and sharing information that mattered. “We are doing this as part of community policing pillar number five that is reaching out to the people with music and arts,” he said. “We will also be present at the Duavata Northern Crime Prevention Carnival at Subrail Park in Labasa this week.”
