New venue attracts top junior surfers
The 3rd Powerade Junior Pro surfing competition will be held at Cloudbreak on Sonaisali Island on July 21-22.
Surfing Fiji head coach Ian Portingale said the shift from Sigatoka has attracted 13 international surfers from Australia and Hawaii. Portingale added 2016 winner, Holly Williams is also making a return in this year’s competition.
“The reason for the event is to try and give our surfers to what is out there on an international field,” Portingale said.
“Top rated Australian junior Alister Reginato along with Will Muskens, in the 19 and under boys, has been impressive in several international events.
“In the girls, 2016 winner Australian Holly Williams and Australian WQS surfer Sophie McAllister will be contesting.
“Hawaiian Jake Maki is used to powerful reef breaks and knows what is required to take the win.”
Portingale is urging the public to support our local surfers.
“This will be a premier junior surfing event in Fiji and anyone who is interested in seeing what the standard is like internationally they should make an effort to make it to the event and watch it.
“Fiji’s top juniors Api Camoro and Kalani Wakeham have experience out at Cloudbreak as has Kayla and Kiesha Wakeham and continue to improve with each surf.”
Thirty two juniors will be vying to win either the 19 and under or 16 and under boys and girls titles and take home the prize money.
