OF THEIR ACHIEVEMENTS

Cadet Semi Batilumilumi was stunned when the Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, Rear Admiral Viliame Naupoto, presented him with the Best Overall award at yesterday’s cadet passing-out parade at Monfort Technical Institute in Savusavu.

The 18-year-old, originally from Tuatua, Labasa, said being away from parents and home for the first time was challenging for him.

“I came to this institute to pursue a Certificate in Carpentry and Joinery programme in 2017 and an interest for joining the cadets grew this year,” said the second year student.

“Being a cadet is not easy, as you have to be disciplined, maintain good character and good posture.” The aspiring soldier and third eldest of five siblings dedicated his award to his parents, Vilimaina Waqa and Jona Maiwaikava. “Whatever I am today is because of my parents and I want to thank them to attending to my wishes and fulfilling my desire to study at the Monfort Institute of Technology,” Semi said.

Mikaele Lawaeli, holding on to the Overall Discipline award, said he was proud to stand alongside his friend, Semi.

“We are both 18-years-old, aspiring to be soldiers, doing the same course and being away from family has made us realise that friendship-connection is needed for survival and development,” the young man from Taveuni Island said.

“I am really happy that I have made my parents proud. “This achievement is a ladder to my bigger dream of supporting my family.”

Meanwhile, Elia Laivou of Vesidrua, Seaqaqa, in the province of Macuata, said he was shocked to receive the Best Cadet award.

The 19-year-old enrolled into the Certificate in Cabinet Making programme was among the 58 students who were selected after a few weeks of training.

Aubrey Manoa of Labasa was given the Best Platoon trophy and said he wished to thank the 24 members of his platoon for working hard to earn the award.
