Obey Traffic Rules, Don’t Endanger Life: LTA

Regulations state that a driver when driving must have both hands firmly on the steering wheel unless when changing gear or otherwise operating other vehicle controls.

It is an offence for drivers to eat or drink while driving. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) clarified this after people used social media to express their grievances after they were booked by LTA officers.

The law was enforced under the Land Transport (Traffic Infringement Notice) Regulations 2000. The LTA has warned drivers not to endanger their life by disobeying road safety rules.

In response to questions from the Fiji Sun sent, the LTA said: “If a food or beverage causes a distraction to the driver while he/she is driving without having his/her both hands on the steering wheel, then it can be categorised as an offence under the Land Transport (Traffic Infringement Notice) Regulations 2000.

“The regulations state that a driver when driving must drive with both hands firmly on the steering wheel unless when changing gear or otherwise operating other vehicle controls.

“All learners learn about this during their driver’s learning and drivers test phase.”

The LTA pleads with people to take proactive measures to avoid accidents or fatalities from happening.

“In trying to pick up the food or beverage, opening the cap of the bottle or while consuming it, a driver may likely lose concentration on driving,” the LTA said.

“Consequently, it can cause the vehicle to go off-road, collide with another vehicle or hit an object,” the LTA said.

“Therefore, it is advised that drivers do not consume beverage or food while driving.

“Do not endanger your life by disobeying road safety rules.

The recent statistics on road fatalities have become a major concern. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) and the Fiji Police Force are working tirelessly to ensure that road users abide by the land transport or traffic rules.

In a statement the LTA said this was an effort to reduce road fatalities and mishaps and to create a safe road for all Fijians.

The LTA is urging all road users to follow all traffic laws in the interest of their safety.
