College Lives Diversity, Turns It Into Dance
Sacred Heart College students will depict a theme of “Diversity” through their dance performance during the Kula Awards - Fiji Link Dance Competition on January 28 at the National Gymnasium.
The school’s dance competition coordinator, Kunal Chand, said that the performance would be for nine minutes and the dance involved people of all races.
“We are a multicultural college because we have students from outside Fiji like Korea and China,” Mr Chand said.
There are about 20 participants and the college had been a three-time winner at the annual show in 2012, 2013 and 2014.
“Diversity describes the similarities and differences that people have,” Mr Chand said.
“It includes important and interrelated dimensions of human identity such as race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity and expression, socioeconomic status, nationality, citizenship, religion, sexual orientation, ability, and age.”
Year 12 student, Teresia Baleinakorodawa, a choreographer and producer within the dance group said the dancers had been working hard and coming together every afternoon for rehearsals.
“Since I also participated last year, I find it interesting because we are able to interact with people and see new talents,” she said.
Josefa Suiqua of Year 10, who is also a member of the dance group said that he was inspired by his sister who was also part of the dance group.
“I love dancing to songs, which depicts meaningful messages such as diversity,” he said.
