Whatever the result, let’s support them

After a shaky start in the 35-10 win against Japan at the Rugby World Cup Sevens in San Francisco, the Fiji Airways Fijian 7s bounced back to wallop a strong Argentina side yesterday. The big win has raised fans’ expectation of the team because we all want to see them win the Melrose Cup for the record third time.

But, as of now, it’s best to let things be and not to count our chickens before they hatch.

We have to remember that anything can happen in sevens rugby.

A fine example at this Rugby World Cup 7s was how Scotland fought from a 0-26 deficit to edge Kenya 3126.

So let’s not be carried away. But take things one at a time.

Fiji play against New Zealand at 8:02am today in the second semi-final. England meet South Africa in the first semi-final. We must always expect the worst and hope for the best. Nothing is impossible unless we play our cards right. Head coach Gareth Baber told SUNsports yesterday that despite the big 43-7 win over Argentina in the quarterfinal, he still needed to review the game and work on things that they could do.

“There’s no big deal on who we play because we’ve played them competitively before,” he said.

“We still need to get the boys healthy, sleep well and be ready.”

Whatever the outcome our team will produce it’s always best to be there to support the players and officials.

This is the time they most need it and it’s our job to give it to them.

So let’s wish them well.

Fiji has won twice since the start of the tournament in 1993 at Murrayfield in Edinburgh.

Our first win was in 1997 in the Hong Kong and the second was in 2005, again in Hong Kong.

New Zealand is the defending champion from the 2013 tournament in Russia.

Whatever the outcome our team will produce it’s always best to be there to support the players and officials. This is the time they most need it and it’s our job to give it to them. So let’s wish them well.
