Jasa Veremalua aims to quit after the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. And the Fiji Airways Fijian 7s rep is keen to keep his body in top shape to continue flying the flag with pride in the next two years. The Korotogo, Baravi, Nadroga native made the comment after their disappointing performance at the 2018 Rugby World Cup Sevens in San Francisco over the weekend. Being a member of the team that won the gold medal at 2016 Rio Olympics, Veremalua is keen on defending the title in Tokyo.
And the road to Tokyo starts at the World Sevens Series on November 30–December 1 in Dubai.
“I aim to keep on wearing the Fijian 7s jumper in the next two years. I will only retire after winning another gold medal for Fiji at the Tokyo Olympics,” he said.
“We also wanted to win the Melrose Cup at the Rugby World Cup Sevens but we fell short of our target.
“But that is not the end of the world and I have already set my target for the next two years. “Coach Gareth Baber and the players have a solid two years to achieve our target. We have a lot of boys who would stand up and work with us in this dream.” Veremalua made his debut for Fiji at the 2013 Wellington Sevens and has been a regular face in the side. “We had a good team and the expectation was high from the fans,” he added.
“Even sevens legend Waisale Serevi saying that Fiji have a 98 per cent chance of winning.
“We knew we let Fiji down. But at the end of the day we should learn, move on and be gracious in defeat.”
