After a hectic few months of work, staff members of the Fijian Parliament secretariat and their families had a family fun day at My Suva Picnic Park last Saturday.

It was also a time for Parliament staff to thank their family members for putting up with the long and late hours of work.

The Chair for Parliament’s Wellness, Sports and Social Committee, Sefanaia Tudonu, said this fun day was to bring families closer and spend quality time together.

“The Fiji Parliament started in 2014 and we have been involved in activities like this. We have an awards night and sports day, so this is the first family fun day for this year,” he said. “Since we were always working throughout the year and late at night we just wanted to show our family members what it is that we do in Parliament. “We wanted to thank our family members for putting up with us, their support and always putting up with us during late hours. “Family is very important and our leaders and management have always advised us to work hard for our families and we just want to demonstrate that.” Mr Tudonu kicked off the family fun day with a tour of Parliament for all family members.

“We had a Zumba exercise event and then we had bouncy castles for kids and lunch for the whole family.”

In addition, the family fun day was part of an effort to target and reduce non-communicable diseases. Since most of the employees were caught up with their busy time schedules, the family fun day served as a means for physical activity and to work on their fitness.

The secretarial side of Fiji Parliament are generally procedural, research, library, ICT, Hansard, tables, committee, finance, inter-parliamentary, human resources and general administration staff.

A total of 119 adults and 92 children attended the event.
