Former national rugby captain and hooker Greg Smith says Fiji Rugby is where his heart will always belong. Smith was born and raised in New Zealand but played for Fiji in 1995 since his dad was born here. He made his debut against Wales where Fiji lost by 22-21 before joining the Waikato Rugby Union.

Speaking to SUNsports yesterday, Smith said he wishes to play a role in Fiji Rugby and help develop it further.

“Fiji Rugby has been in my heart ever since I was small,” he said.

“There was a time that I played for Fiji, now I am too old to do that and if the opportunity comes to join the organisation I would like to take up the part.

“I think Fiji Rugby needs everyone’s support and I have no doubt that we have the best athletes in the world and with the right support to run the team and the players could be wonderful.”

Smith said the main challenge is to inspire the Fiji Airways Flying Fijian to be a good team and that require support on and off the field.

“It takes more than just the players on the field to make the success but it also takes a lot of support behind that.”

“My message is that the Fiji team is my number one team and I will always support the players and the next time they get out there they should prove that they are the best in the world.”

Smith is currently working with the Fiji National University and the University of the South Pacific in collaboration with Fiji Sports Commission on Project Vital.
