The University of Fiji has had its Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting accredited through Chartered Practising Accountants (CPA) Australia.

Acting Vice Chancellor, Narendra Reddy made the announcement at a press conference in Saweni Campus, Lautoka earlier this week.

“CPA accreditation is a significant milestone for us. When we talk about accreditation, any university qualification needs to be accredited,” Mr Reddy said.

“It needs to be recognised by some other body.

“We can say we are doing a good job, but it has to be someone from outside saying that we are doing a good job.”

Mr Reddy said the accreditation would add value to their accounting programmes.

“This means that our accounting programme is on par with accounting qualifications in Australia and New Zealand,” Mr Reddy said. “The accreditation is a major step forward for the university because it placed them on the world map.” Mr Reddy said that it would also help students build a network with other professionals abroad. “We are able to share resources and in professional development of our staff,” he said.

Mr Reddy also assured that tuition fees pertaining to the course units would be the same.

“The accreditation will also be a major boost for students staying in the Western Division,” Mr Reddy said.

“Previously students travelled to the Central Division for the same programme.”

In addition, the University of Fiji will now offer a new programme, Bachelor of Public Health and Primary Health Care, from Semester 1, 2019.

The programme introduces the students to the concept of wellness, pre-empting disease outbreaks, mitigation of diseases and disaster management preparedness. Mr Reddy said that this would open doors for innovative research, processes and interventions to counter problems and health crisis es in the Pacific.
