Jacinda Ardern gives a shout-out to ‘every parent’ as she announces her return to work as PM
New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has announced her return to work via a Facebook video.
The 38-year-old and partner Clarke Gayford welcomed their daughter, Neve Te Aroha Ardern Gayford, on June 21. Ms Ardern has been on maternity leave for six weeks, and explained she will return to work in about a week’s time.
“A quick hello as we get ready to come back,” the new mum says in the video, which has been viewed around 182,000 times.
“I’m multitasking like every single parent I’ve ever met, so a big shoutout to all of them,” she says.
Upon her return to work, the politician says she plans to focus on issues that
“really mat - ter” t o her, including mental health, the environment, trade-related matters and an “employment-related announcement” she says she’s particularly proud of.
Ms Ardern’s video has been praised by thousands of viewers who left supportive comments on her post.
“Love the multi-tasking. Rock a cradle and run a country. Showing women can be mothers and leaders,” one wrote.
“Will be good to have you back. Sure you will be feeling a little apprehensive at leaving your wee girl, but I’m sure she will be in very good hands with her Daddy,” another said. “Look after yourself Jacinda,” writes Sarah.
“Those early days with bubba are so special and important! You’re an amazing PM, but I hope you don’t over do it !!!” Ms Ardern also spoke of the gifts she’s received from her fans, including hand-knitted blankets.
“What a new appreciation you get for mums after you have your own. A little thank you to my mum and all mums out there as well, including Clarke’s who is here helping us right now, too.”
