The Fiji National Muslim team beat defending champions Canada 2-0 at the Fiji, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, America FANCA Muslim Football tournament at Churchill Park, Lautoka on Thursday night. The Fijians were energetic and took the game to the Canadians. Hopes were high after their opening 1-0 win over a tough United States of America side. Crafty midfielder Zibraaz Sahib drew first blood when he slammed in the first goal from the penalty spot as they led 1-0 at halftime. The Fijians continued on the pressure in the second half with the second goal scored by Abbas Ali. He blasted the ball to the back of the net leaving the Canadian defenders napping.

Fiji National Muslim team manager Mohammed Mohin Rafiq said the players lifted their game to beat the defending champions.

“In the change room, clear cut instructions were given to the players by the coach Javed Ahmed,” he said.

“The players were told to fight for possession and hold onto the ball so that we could score more goals.” Ahmed said despite dominating the first spell it was tough in the second one.

“Canada came back strongly in the second half however many of their attempts were saved by our goalkeeper Azmat Begg.” Rafiq said that there had been slight injuries to the team however they are working hard on the players’ recovery. The Fijians now have 6 points and they are hopeful of another win in their next game. FANCA secretary Aiyub Ali said the Fijian side were looking good this year and if they continue at this rate they stand a good chance of winning.

Fiji take on Australia today at 12.45pm in their last pool match.
