The Fijian Government has been a proud supporter of the Fiji International since its inauguration in 2014 and has seen great results in terms of broadcast reach and marketing exposure which helped position Fiji on the global stage. Speaking at the closing ceremony for the Fiji International presented by Fiji Airways at the Natadola Bay Championship Golf Course yesterday, Minister for Trade, Tourism, Lands and Mineral Resources Faiyaz Koya said the level of exposure and marketing mileage this tournament generated was priceless.

This is coupled with the add-on benefits to the Fijian tourism industry and our local communities had been remarkable.

“We all know that Fiji is a rugby playing nation, however, since the launch of this tournament five years ago, many Fijians, have come to appreciate and learn more about the great game of golf,” Koya said. “The Fiji International has done more than just bring a spectacular golf tournament to our shores.

“It has laid a foundation for the continued growth of this sport in Fiji. The Westpac School Golf training clinics that has been running for the past three years in our local schools has taught basic golfing skills to over 1,000 students and teachers.”

Koya said the tournament provided local golfers the opportunity to play alongside high ranking professionals.

Six Fijian golfers participated in this year’s Fiji International compared to four in 2014.

“The tournaments’ volunteer programme has also achieved great results.”

He thanked all local and international volunteers, the private sector, the Fijian Made artisans and Sanasana villagers.
