Free internet access through a Government initiative has brought joy to students of the Fiji National University (FNU) Natabua Campus.

Third year student, Alowesi Taleiqio said this was a major boost to enhance their studies.

“Our school Wi-Fi is not available sometimes when we need to use internet and it creates problems for us, especially during times of assignments,” Alowesi said. “Free internet access will now enable all students to get timely and consistent access to services, which is crucial for most tertiary students.”

Another student, Luisa Vosailagi was all smiles yesterday after the announcement of access to free internet services.

She said students generally missed out on certain things because of the lack of consistent internet access, however they were now all on the winning side.

The FNU Natabua Campus will now provide free internet access to all students as part of the Government’s effort to make Fiji a Digital country.

This was announced by Attorney General and Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum during the launch at FNU Natabua campus yesterday.

“The whole idea is to provide a new level of technology at not just university level, but for the entire country,” Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said. “High internet speed could be attained in these areas.

“You can get great high internet speed within the campus area,” he said.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said 50 per cent of the entire country’s population were below the age of 27 whereas 70 per cent were below the age of 40.

“As part of the 2018-2019 Budget, all 24 university campuses around the country will be provided with free internet access for students,” he said.

“We want students to get access to technology in order to assist them in their research work.”

More good news was announced as people will be able to access high speed internet services at Shirley Park in Lautoka.

“We want to provide people with spaces where they can come together and get access to technology. It will be a safe haven for people to come together and access technology,” Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said. Edited by Percy Kean
