Thank you for remembering the poor.

This was the comment by Setaita Qalotaki after she was given some clothes by the University of the South Pacific netball club. Ms Qalotaki has been living on the streets of Suva for more than five years.

“This is very thoughtful of them to reach out to the homeless like me,” she said.

“Thank you so much.”

Club team leader Volasiga Justice said after the netball finals last week, they thought of doing something to give back to the community so they came up with the idea of donating clothes to the homeless and the underprivileged.

“This is the first of the many community works that we will be doing as a team,” he said.

“We feel that it is important for us to reach out to people who need to be taken care of especially those who live on the street. “We really just need to talk to them so that they feel loved and they know that they are also being recognised.”

USP netball club has more than 18 members from different Pacific countries.

Yesterday, the team reached out to more than 14 people around Suva donating clothes.

Mr Justice said some of them accepted the clothes while others wanted money. He said the next thing they would do was cleaning of shorelines.
