Defending Under-19 champion Suva Grammar School started with the bang during the first day of the Fiji Secondary Schools Netball competition. The Grammarians defeated Nasinu Secondary School 24-13 at Central College Lautoka yesterday. The side outplayed Nasinu by displaying crisp and top class netball lead.
Nasinu only managed to score goals in the last two quarters after trailing 7-12 at halftime.
Keleti Tikotani, team captain for Suva Grammar, said the girls played really well.
“We won but there are few areas we need to work on,” Tikotani said. She said there were high expectations from fans as they are the defending champions.
“We just need to do our best,” she said.
Tikotani said teamwork and exposure to good competition are their strengths.
She also acknowledged the hard work and sacrifice of their parents in making it possible for everyone to be at the annual event.
She said they need to adapt playing under the scorching sun. “Whatever the circumstances, I just want my side to give their very best,” she said.
Coach Navitalai Naivalu is optimistic of a positive outcome. “We will work on weaknesses and try to improve on our next game,” he said. “We won because the girls stuck to the basics and effectively communicated with each other.”
The finals will be played today.
