No substitute for hard work, says engineer
Seeing how good road conditions positively impacted those who depend on it for daily survival gives him joy.
Fulton Hogan Hiways Savusavu maintenance manager Isaac Rakabikabi initially opted to become a lawyer or teacher, however he chose Civil Engineering as a field of work.
“I was an avid reader as a student and did well in English and Social Studies,” he said.
“I took up science subjects in Form Five only after the school I attended didn’t offer the subject combinations I wanted and it was then that my interest in the engineering field started.”
Based at the FHH Savusavu Depot, Mr Rakabikabi began working for FHH in November 2013.
“The best thing about it is the inhouse training provided and the practical job knowledge on site that really hones our skills in management and engineering,” Mr Rakabikabi said.
He enjoys seeing how good road conditions positively impacted those who depend on it for daily survival.
He plans to be involved in road works as an entrepreneur in 10 years
Mr Rakabikabi said, “it’s interesting and a field that is dynamic and robust which makes work challenging, but also very satisfying when you see the positive impacts you have on your local community when you change or better their way of life.”
The 31-year-old from Nasekula Village, Labasa, Macuata has two brothers and two sisters. “Hard times taught me to be grateful for the things afforded to me by my parents and appreciate the people you have with you, but in that to realise that nothing in life comes without hard work,” Mr Rakabikabi said.
Mr Rakabikabi attended Bethel Primary School, Labasa Sangam College and the Fiji National University.
