Indonesian’s 73rd Independence Day anniversary celebrations were held at the ambassador’s resident in Tamavua on Friday. Indonesia gained Independence on August 17, 1945. Indonesian Ambassador to Fiji Benyamin Scott Carnadi said the celebration, with Indonesians living in Fiji, was great and they had a couple of sports activity such as fun ball and traditional games to commemorate the anniversary. “Things went smoothly as we had a flag hosting event to remember the heroes who brought independence to our country,” he said.

“It feels great celebrating here in Suva. We are similar to Fiji because we are an island nation with similar problems and aspirations like climate change and visions for prosperity.”

Mr Carnadi said during Independence Day celebrations every year in Fiji they were joined by 150 Indonesians residing in Fiji.

“There is always strong co-operation between Fiji and Indonesia and we always support each other in every area and ways possible,” he said.

“We honour the developments in Fiji, both politically and socioculturally and as Fiji is now heading for elections we wish the Fijian Government and people all the best in all their endeavours”. Mr Carnadi said the Indonesian Government also provided scholarships to Fiji citizens every year. Ozie managing director Hansery Moechlies said he felt at home during celebrations at Tamavua today, “I have been here since 2016 and attended Independence Day celebration every year,” he said. “Back home in Indonesia today people will be crowding towns and cities to mark the occasion with celebrations in their own ways.” Mr Moechlies said he loved celebrating with his Fijian friends. Yat Sen Secondary School student Jaanvi Kumar said she was invited by a schoolmate to be part of the Independence Day celebrations.

“This is my first year attending the celebrations and it was thrilling with the delicious food and all the varieties tasted very nice,” she said.

An Indonesian native residing in Fiji, Ayu Steffen, said the celebration was fantastic.

“This is my second time and it has always been special,” she said.
