Bala, WAF put plans in place for dry spell
The Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) Board of Directors, senior management and a Government team met yesterday to put in place plans regarding the water situation due to the current dry weather spells.
WAF chairman, Mr Bhavesh Kumar, updated the Government team on the regional-situation on the ground regarding water levels and the preventative measures that are in place. Because of the climatic changes resulting in the dry spells he urged members of the public to practise water conservation by ways of minimising the washing of cars, driveways as well as watering of gardens.
The rural water carting schedule is being released, and affected rural communities are to follow the schedule to track their areas delivery times.
Paipai resident Nazim Ali is optimistic of Government’s assistance as the Western Division braces for a spell of dry weather.
“The commitment and ability of this Government to assist people have been proven in the past,” he said.
Mr Ali was asked if they were concerned about the current dry weather that was now being experienced in the Western Division. “At the moment we still have running water, but we believe and know that when the time comes this Government will come to our help, so we are really not concerned about the dry season,” Mr Ali said. “In the past when we had watershortages this Government ensured that water supplies were available and always arrived on time.
“But having said that, if supplies are delayed, then we will rely on the Paipai River to source our water needs.”
On the way to Paipai Settlement in Lautoka, it was evident that the effects of the sun’s scorching heat were beginning to be seen in the dry glades of grass on the roadside and the shallow rivers. Residents in the nearby sugarcane farming settlements still have running water, but are unsure for how long.
In its early response to the upcoming dry spell the Government has given approval for 200,000 litres of water to be transported to the Malolo Islands today.
This was confirmed by the Commissioner Western’s office.
This will be used to fill eight water tanks, with 2x10,000 litres for the Clinics and 3x5000litres at the doctor’s quarters and 3x5000 for the nurses’ quarters.
The Commissioner Western’s office said they will be prioritising Health Centres and schools.
Water supplies will be delivered today.
