ANasinu businessman, Imran Khan, charged with possession of illicit drugs was released on bail by Labasa Magistrates Court yesterday. He appeared before Magistrate Cama Tuberi.

Labasa Police prosecutor Constable Abinash Prasad objected to the bail application.

He said the case was of public interest because it was the first report of a person allegedly found with a new dangerous drug (Methamphetamine) in the Northern Division.

He then elaborated saying that it was not an unusual drug and this was a strong case.

The accused’s lawyer Ami Kohli said his client should be released on bail because he was a businessman operating three different businesses in Suva.

Mr Kohli said his client was in Labasa because he was one of the sponsors of the festival in Labasa and stayed over the weekend in one of the hotels with two more people. He added that there was a similar case where a prominent lawyer in Viti Levu alleged to be in possession of the similar drug was granted bail.

Magistrate Tuberi granted bail and ordered the accused to pay a bond to the sum of $1000 and two sureties to pay $1000 each.

He then ordered Khan to surrender all his travel documents and to report at Nakasi Police Station on Saturdays.

Three businessmen including Khan were taken into Police custody after a raid.

This followed a tip-off and Police found packets of powdered substance allegedly Methamphetamine weighing 6.6 kilograms. The case has been adjourned for mention on October 29.
