Minister Calls for Community to Work in Harmony
The close-knit community of Cuvu in Sigatoka has been urged to work together with organisers of the Cuvu Carnival.
The encouraging words from the Minister for Local Government, Housing and Community Development, and Infrastructure and Transport Parveen Bala were made at the closing of the Cuvu Carnival at the FSC Ground, on Saturday night. He acknowledged and applauded the carnival brainchild of which Kulsum Nisha, a former resident of Cuvu, but now resides in Sydney, Australia, with her family.
“I thank Kulsum for organising this carnival. It is not an easy task because it takes time, effort, money and well wishes to make it a success,” Mr Bala said.
“I would like to urge all of you present here to work with her so that we can take this carnival to another level.
“As we have heard that all these years there have been no fundraising, but that does not mean that she has abandoned the dream that she has. “You all have heard that her dream is build a rehab centre. I will assure that she will have the full support of the Government wherever we can provide our assistance.” The annual event, which started in 2016, is organised by the former Fiji resident with the aim to unify the various ethnic communities. “The theme of the carnival is live with a purpose. I want to give back to the community that has built my foundation,” she said.
“This event is not for fundraising. It is to bring our proud community together, to meet friends, family and for entertainment.”
Ms Nisha grew up in the locality studied in Naidovi Primary and Cuvu College respectively before migrating. She thanked Hasmat Investment and Fiji Sugar Corporation chief operating officer Navneet Chandra for giving their support to host such a grand event.
