Govt Carts Water to Yasawa Islands

An expected 230,000 litres of water will be distributed at the various centres.

In a bid to address water shortages in the Yasawa Islands during this dry spell, Government sent another barge this week to supply water to the affected islanders.

Acting Commissioner Western Division Joji Satakala confirmed yesterday that a government barge departed the Lautoka Wharf earlier this week. The ship MV Vatulawa carried on board 130,000 litres of water. Mr Satakala said Naviti Primary School and Yasawa High School were each supplied with six tanks of water containing 10,000 litres of water. He said Gaunavou Primary School was also supplied with two tanks of water, each having a capacity of 5000 litres.

On Nacula Island, two schools and a health centre were also supplied with water.

Ratu Meli Memorial School was provided with 130,000 litres of water. In addition, Yasawa North Secondary was supplied with 30,000 litres of water. Nacula Health Centre was also provided with 80,000 litres of water. According to the office of the Commissioner of the Western Division, more water cartages have been planned for later this week.

The forecast list includes Yaqeta Island. The specific areas in this proposed delivery locations include Yaqeta Village School, Yaqeta Health Centre and Namosolevu Catholic School in Vuaki Village.

An expected 230,000 litres of water will be distributed at the various centres. Various centres in Yasawa Island would also be distributed with water in the coming days.

This includes Ratu Namasi Village School, Bukama Village School, Rara Kindergarten School and Teci Nursing Station. The expected capacity to be supplied is at 85,000 litres.

Mr Satakala said the focus is also towards the major schools as students are approaching the examination periods.

He said health centres have also been given equal priority.

After the completion in the major school and health centres, the focus would then be shifted to villages.

The villages include the districts of Yasawa, Nacula, Naviti Tikina, Wayalevu Island, Waya Lailai Island, Malolo Island and Vatulele Island. Meanwhile, people throughout the country have been urged to conserve drinking water.

According to the office of the Commissioner of the Western Division, more water cartages have been planned for later this week.
