LTA boss responds to cause of road accidents

Chairman Maharaj says drivers not following road rules a major causal factor.

Land Transport Authority (LTA) is concerned with the increasing number of road accidents in the past few weeks and is advising all motorists to take extra care on our roads.

The current road death toll stands at 47 compared to 41 for the same period last year which is of grave concern.

LTA chairman Vijay Maharaj said drivers not adhering to the road rules were the major causal factor of road accidents this year. Mr Maharaj is reminding all motorists to ensure that they drive with courtesy at all times and within the road rules.

“It is also sad to note that some drivers continue to drive under the influence of alcohol, which is a great risk not only to the drivers but other road users as well,” Mr Maharaj said.

“The pain and suffering of losing a loved one in a fatal road accident is far more tragic than one can im- agine, unless you have been connected with families bearing such losses.”

All drivers are again advised not to drive vehicles under the influence of alcohol because there are high chances of an accident that can result in fatalities. LTA is also requesting the public to report to the Police or LTA any drunk driving cases they know about. “LTA on the same note will not condone any corrupt practices, especially in acquiring driving licences by bribing driving instructors or driving examiners. Those who are caught in any such situations will be referred to Police or FICAC for criminal prosecution,” Mr Maharaj said.

The public are also reminded that people who give money in the form of a bribe either to an LTA official or to any other person is also criminally liable and can be charged for commiting a criminal offence. “Members of the public and all LTA customers are advised to come forward with the details of any alleged corrupt practices and help LTA eradicate any form of corrupt practices from the transport industry at large,” Mr Maharaj said. Members of the community can also call our nearest offices or text LTA on 582 for any complaint regarding unsafe driving practices on our roads. Source: LTA
