Busy two weeks for senior golfers

The Fiji Senior Golfers Association (FSGA) will have two important events scheduled for the next two weeks at the Fiji Golf Club.

The first set for tomorrow is the Jack Akbar Trophy stableford event sponsored by his son, Seemab & Akbar family and it is opened to all golfers (men, women) including non FSGA members. Tee off is from 12noon to 1pm Mohammed Razak Akbar, founder of Akbar Engineering Limited, the man, affectionately known as Jack, was a businessman, engineer and an avid golfer.

Sons, Seemab and Taabish said though a businessman, their fathers’ heart was always set on community service. He spent his youth in the Fiji Scouts movement, attaining the position of Commissioner for the Suva District,”Seemab said.

“He was also founder of the 2nd Toorak Troop and president of the Suva Jaycees.” He was an active member of the Fiji Muslim League and the Fiji Muslim Sports Association.

He piloted the construction of the Suva Muslim College at Mead Road, Nabua, after it had been left idle as a partly constructed building for 10 years. He became a Justice of Peace and was part of the last group of Fijians to be honored by the Queen, with an MBE in 1987. The second event is the 37th annual Open which is again sponsored by Shipping Services (Fiji) Ltd. This is a stroke event and is open to FSGA members and golfers over the age of 55 years.

It will be held next Monday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Entries for this event close tomorrow.

The defending champion for the men’s event is Vijay S Goundan while for the ladies it is Lyndall Fisher. Both will be defending their titles.

Our former world No.1 golfer Vijay Singh , is an honorary member of FSGA.
