Residents to Get Fresh Veggies After Prasad’s Initiative

True to his word, Mr Vodafone Friendly North Vishal Prasad teamed up with the queen and king contestants to upgrade the Labasa Senior Citizens Home’s vegetable garden. They cleaned the green house and planted a number of vegetables like pumpkin, cabbage, long bean, tomatoes and cucumber.

The 24-year-old dietician of Qomate Health Centre in Labasa said the idea to carry out this first project after the crowning was when they visited the home to distribute gifts which was organised by the festival committee. “During the tour I saw the green house was empty and was informed by the staff members that since the change over to a new management, nothing had yet been done,” Mr Prasad said. “Backyard gardening is a form of physical activity.

“We have carried out the initiative and requested the staff members to take ownership and see to it that the vegetables grow well so that they can receive the produce and add supplement to residents’ diet.

“This garden is also set-up for food security in times of crisis and should encourage wellness of the staff that look after more than 20 residents,” he added.

“I would like to thank the Food and Nutrition Centre for providing us with tools and seeds and Department of Social Welfare for accepting my request to carry out the project.

Vodafone Festival of the Friendly North legal advisor Ami Kohli said Mr Prasad was the first king contestant winner to carry out a community project after a few weeks of crowning.

“I have been in the festival committee for so many years and encouraged winners to take up their own initiative to do something for the community,” Mr Kohli said. “We are happy to see contestants gathered for this garden project at our only senior citizens home in Labasa and hope to see more of such community work happen.” Edited by Ranoba Baoa
