Stu­dent: (sev­enth grade) Teacher, why do we ig­nore some let­ters in pro­noun­ci­a­tion, like the let­ter H in.. Hour, Hon­our etc?

English teacher: We are not ig­nor­ing them, they are con­sid­ered silent. At lunch break teacher gave the stu­dent her packed lunch and asked the stu­dent to HEAT it in the cafe­te­ria. Stu­dent eats all the food and re­turned the empty con­tainer.

Teacher: what hap­pened i told you to HEAT my food and this is an empty con­tainer? Stu­dent: Madam, I though the H was silent.
