THE SILENT LETTER

Student: (seventh grade) Teacher, why do we ignore some letters in pronounciation, like the letter H in.. Hour, Honour etc?

English teacher: We are not ignoring them, they are considered silent. At lunch break teacher gave the student her packed lunch and asked the student to HEAT it in the cafeteria. Student eats all the food and returned the empty container.

Teacher: what happened i told you to HEAT my food and this is an empty container? Student: Madam, I though the H was silent.
