Police outline key fatality factors

Speeding, drink driving and careless driving are the three main causes of a rise in road deaths this year, says the Fiji Police Force. Spokesperson Ana Naisoro made the comment as she explained that the road death toll so far this year had risen to 53, compared to 47 for the same period last year.

Ms Naisoro said the main challenge was trying to change attitudes towards road safety. “What we need from all road users is acceptance of the fact road safety is everyone's responsibility,” she said.

“Once drivers for instance drive within the speed limit because it's stipulated by law at all times and not just because traffic officers are seen, only then can we make a difference.”

Ms Naisoro said the force was constantly reviewing its deployment.

“We do need to be more unpredictable in our operations as stated by the Commissioner of Police,” she said Meanwhile, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) is concerned with the increasing number of road accidents and is advising motorists to take extra care on our roads. Chairman Vijay Maharaj says drivers not adhering to the road rules is one major attributing factor of the road accidents this year.

He has reminded all motorists to ensure that they drive with courtesy at all times and within the road rules.

“It is also sad to note that some drivers continue to drive under the influence of alcohol, which is a great risk not only to the drivers but other road users as well,” Mr Maharaj said.

“The pain and suffering of losing a loved one in a fatal road accident are far more tragic than one can imagine unless you have been connected with families bearing such losses.

“Do not encourage acts of wrongdoing on the road - it is not worth it, it will only result in trauma, mishaps and loss of life.” Mr Maharaj urged members of the public to call LTA's nearest offices or text on 582 for any complaint regarding unsafe driving practices on our roads.
