Family Mourns 22-year-old breadwinner
I never go to sleep if my son has not arrived home, says a grieving mother.
My son is no more. The breadwinner of the family is gone, Varanisese Nawesi wailed yesterday.
This is after the 63-year-old was told that her 22-year-old son, Josefa Dokoni, was killed in a road accident at Waimicia, Ra, on Friday evening.
Police said yesterday Mr Dokoni, from Nasavusavu Village in Ra, was travelling from Matawailevu Village towards Waimicia after 6pm when he reportedly lost control of the car he was driving.
It is understood the vehicle veered off the road and landed in a drain.
Wiping away her tears, Mrs Nawesi related farewelling her son on Friday saying she could not believe that was the last time she would Josefa Dokoni. see him alive.
And she was still in shock yesterday.
“At about 6pm, my elder son called and told me that Josefa was no more,” said Mrs Nawesi.
“I did not know what to do because I could not believe what he was saying,” she said. Mrs Nawesi then collapsed on the floor.
Her husband, Ravulada Dokoni, was also in tears as he tried to console her.
Mrs Nawesi recalled the last few words she had with her son that afternoon.
“He told me that he would just be back at home in a while,” she said. She said she was eagerly waiting for her son to return after she prepared dinner for everyone.
“I never go to sleep if my son has not arrived home,” she said. She said that her son was very respectful his parents.
“He never talked back to us and followed everything we said to him,” Mrs Nawesi said.
“He helped me do my housework. “He always ensured that we had food on the table as he would do work very hard to make ends meet.” Mrs Nawesi said Josefa was supposed to get married later this year. “He was so happy and I prepared mats for his wedding ceremony,” she said.
“But everything is just gone.” Late Josefa was survived by his parents, four sisters and a brother. He will be laid to rest on Wednesday at their home in Nasavusavu.
Investigations into the incident are continuing and a post-mortem examination will be conducted to find out th e cause o f death. The road death toll currently stands at 55 compared with 48 for the same period last year.
