The villagers of Vunaqoru and Koroua in the interior of Nadroga will no longer wash their clothes in the nearby river or source drinking water from there.

This is after the Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation, Mereseini Vuniwaqa officiated the Vunaqoru and Koroua Village Borehole Project in Nadroga on Friday.

“The Government is thankful to this partnership undertaken by BAT Fiji (British American Tobacco Fiji) to align with the Government’s plan,” Ms Vuniwaqa said. “I thank the BAT Fiji for this wonderful gift to these two communities and we look forward to seeing the success of the rest of your projects.

“Water plays a crucial role in the development of mankind. It’s now time for the people of Vunaqoru and Koroua to join the rest of Fiji who have access to clean water and sanitation and enjoy and look after this basic human right to the fullest.”

British American Tobacco Fiji head of External Affairs Meliki Tuinamuana said this was part of the company’s ‘Project Aqua’ which is aimed at providing clean and safe drinking water to ten villages. “The focus is on the communities in our tobacco farming areas in Nadi and Nadroga. The two projects

cost around $50,000 which is part of the total sum of $250,000 for the 10 projects.”

Turaga ni mataqali Volivoli Alipate Senirara said: “We are thankful for this project where two villages with a total of 420 people from the 85 households will benefit.” “Farming produce is our main source of income. We might not have the luxury of water running from the reservoir which exist in towns and cities but we are content.”
