Presently, more than 100,000 Fijians watch Walesi television on their smart phones.

While launching the Walesi free wifi hotspot at the Nadi bus station yesterday, Acting Prime Minister and Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said television news and other programmes could be watched anywhere as long as one downloads the App.

This included Fiji Television, FBC, Mai TV and other entertainment programmes.

The whole idea, he said to around 2000 people who turned up at the event, was for them to come and use this access internet for their own good but please use it responsibly.

He said they want all Fijians to have access (to internet).

He said irrespective of how rich or poor you are, you must have access to internet and this is what the Government wanted to do.

Within two weeks the entire Nadi Market will become a hotspot for free wifi. “We are doing this not only for you to have access to internet for your leisure but also for you to access a lot of information and the many Government services that would be made available.” Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said the Walesi set top box was being given out for free to those earning less than $30,000 annually. Schools that joined in the launched were Swami Vivekananda College, Nadi Muslim College, Nadi Sangam Colege, Ratu Navula College, Votualevu College, Nadi Sangam Primary School, Nadi District School, Andrews Primary School, Nadi Primary School and Nadi Muslim Primary School.

Meanwhile, Walesi chairman Sharvada Sharma said free wifi was being connected to all Fiji National University campuses.

Mr Sharma said Walesi was proud to launch the wifi hotspot in Nadi.

People can enjoy free high speed internet for 60 minutes daily.

“I think this is a great initiative as some people may not afford to have data all the time so this hotspot will help them,” Alena Dawai, from Narewa, Nadi, said.

“It is free and this place a lot of people come and sit here including me and my friends,” Paula Seru from Nawaka Village said.

“During this time when we are doing nothing we can just log in and use the wifi so thank you to the Government.” Darshika Chand, a Fiji National University student from Nasau, in Nadi, said the new wifi was really good and she was happy with what the Government had done.

“This is for university students like me, especially when we have a lot of homework to do.”
