Villagers renew plea for speed humps
The Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) will look into a request by Wasavulu Yavutu villagers for road humps.
This is after the death of six-year-old Apenisa Rawaqa from injuries he suffered during an accident along the village road.
A Fiji Roads Authority official who wished to remain anonymous said speeding and poor driver behaviour were issues which needed to be addressed.
He said speeding through villages, settlements and communities was a problem not only isolated to Wasavulu Yavutu Village. “FRA receives requests from many villages and communities for speed humps, especially after we have upgraded the roads,” he said.
“Installation of infrastructure such as speed humps is the last resort when all other safety measures fail.
“We need to educate the public that speed humps are not the instant cure for all traffic issues.”
The FRA official said he was hopeful that drivers would slow down and show respect for those who lived in villages and communities located along roadsides. Wasavulu Yavutu Village headman Kini Drauna said they would put three big ropes across the road to slow traffic.
Mr Drauna said they would write to the Fiji Roads Authority.
“The reason we’re requesting them is we have been facing road accidents and we need something to be done to prevent accidents,” he added.
