Ex-7s star to lead Airport in today’s final

Former national rugby 7s star William Ryder today leads the charge for the Unimoni sponsored Airport Rugby Club against Ravoravo in the Premiershi­p final at Prince Charles Park, Nadi.

Ryder said this is an important year for them since they are celebratin­g 70 years of the club.

“This is an historic match and for us to celebrate the club existence since 1948,” he said.

“It has been a long road and we aim to rest the cup at the club which will be an added icing to the cake.

“We know that Ravoravo has been a champion side with their involvemen­t with rugby league but we have a plan to show on the field. “We thank our major sponsor Unimoni for believing in us.”

Ravoravo skipper Waisiki Ramatau who plays at fullback said they aim to take back the cup to Betoraurau, the rightful place of the KK’s Hardware Challenge Shield.

“After a lapse of six years we returned to rugby union and we are starting in the premier grade once again. “We expect a good show in the match and our fans will be in full force.”

The side will be banking on Sivaniolo Qoro, Savenaca Saukuru, Viliame Rakuli and Etuate Gusuvalu. Competitio­n co-ordinator Jeff Tamata said, “Words from the Nadi rugby fraternity is that they cannot wait to see this match get underway on Friday under the floodlight­s.”

In the semi-final, Ravoravo trounced Police 29-13 while Airport edged out Momi 2019.

Nadi Rugby Union chairman Sekove Tuilakeba said they are grateful to the support of sponsore Jack’s of Fiji.
