FPCL Staff Clean-Up For Green Port Plan
Staff members of the Fiji Ports Corporation Limited (FPCL) yesterday showed their commitment to achieving their goal of being a green port by participating in a clean-up campaign around Port Muaiwalu.
The clean-up was conducted in conjunction with World Maritime Day, which was celebrated on September 27, 2018. FPCL chief executive officer Vajira Piyasena said the company injected an excess of $200,000 for the Green Port Pacific initiative, which involves three aspects namely Energy Management, Environmental Management and improvement of Quality Management.
“Fiji Ports is aspiring to become a green port in this region,” Mr Piyasena said.
“This green port concept has been supported by the Pacific Community (SPC) and there are certain criteria that are there so it is a broader criterion that we have to fulfil to become a green port.”
He said clean-up campaigns contributed to FPCL’s goal of achieving the larger objective of becoming a green port. “We are the first Pacific port to conduct a comprehensive energy management audit based on which a large number of initiatives have been done including changing of yard lighting to energy saving lighting and power factor correction, power distribution system,” Mr Piyasena said. “Currently we have an incinerator within our ports which will be changed and we will replace it with modern incinerators which is electrically operated to reduce emissions.”
With the implementation of environment friendly strategies, Mr Piyasena added that Fiji Ports has set certain targets to reduce their carbon footprint this year.
“We have in excess of $200,000 for this initiative which includes getting solar panels and all that.”
FPCL staff beautified the Walu Bay port by placing potplants along the walkways.
The campaign is part of the company’s corporate social responsibility.
